Sooner or Later…

A Project List

An online friend Anna asked awhile back what we would like to learn more about. Around here that is a pretty big question the answer depending on what part of the library you are standing. Religion, nature, cooking, homesteading, art, music and all so interesting. But she might like a better answer and knowing how much fun people’s lists are for interesting tidbits here is part of my project list–the fun part, not the paint-the-front room list. In no particular order:

Build this cheap and easy worm bin. It uses two 8-10 gallon storage tubs, a drill, some newspaper and some redworms. Worms would make compost a bit quicker than my pile and eventually could be used for fishing or feeding chickens. Redworms are at the bait store.

Learn to make “plarn” or yarn from plastic grocery bags. One project is a reusable grocery bag. Another idea is a welcome mat or bath mat. Should be sturdy and durable.

Make sandals from old tires. If they are as sturdy and as comfortable as the author describes that would be a big help in the kids footwear department. Gardening shoes too. Or just fun.

For my ds the worker: converting a lawnmower into a generator. He loves to tinker and will mow the lawn when bored so this should be more fun in 100F heat.

Or he might like to build a waste oil heater from an old water heater.

Or make some of his own camping/ hiking gear.

Get the filters to build a homemade Berkey water filter. We are in the New Madrid Fault Zone and if another quake hits in the same area as last time we are in 8/9/10 destruction area depending on who is doing the mapping. Anything over a 7 is, for all planning purposes, total destruction. This town might get lucky, as a small but major highway goes through but gambling is illegal in this part of Arkansas.

Must make a 4H project of this solar cooking site.  Or even top bar hive beekeeping.

The herbs, plants, and gardening I already wrote about.

And an earth oven for outside baking. This is one idea there are others like the one a path to freedom in California or Pockets of the Future.

And in my spare time I can figure out why the links are not underlined so I had to italics them.

So little time…

Earlier this spring, when I was looking into bee-keeping, the impression I was given by the laws in Illinois, is that if you can’t pull the frames out for individual inspection, then the hive was illegal. Something to do with checking for diseases, and if big brother comes knocking, you have to show your frames. Not sure if the top bar would be legal in my parts. I didn’t review it very deeply yet. I think I’ve turned my thoughts away from that venture temporarily. Right now I need to look at hornet erradication. Seems the yellow jackets are taking up residence under a tree out back. They’ve been spying my garden lately, and I am not thrilled by their attention….
