Right now the family garden is a rather small backyard garden. I have been reading and studying (and trying to impliment) about how to produce good amounts in a small space. It seemed providential to find Path to Freedom and their urban homestead set-up. Good ideas to think about and try.
Now that we have more space I have […]

Moving right along…

Well, it seems we will be moving in the not so distance future. DH has been wanting to move closer to his father - an hour+ drive is just too much, esp. since his mother has passed on.
Photo #1 This is the front of the house - The ramp will be coming off - after […]

An online friend Anna asked awhile back what we would like to learn more about. Around here that is a pretty big question the answer depending on what part of the library you are standing. Religion, nature, cooking, homesteading, art, music and all so interesting. But she might like a better answer and knowing how much fun people’s lists are […]

An online friend is having some fun with Queen Anne’s Lace using its royal perogative to grow where it isn’t wanted. Hmmm…roll through the mental rollodex and….
Queen Anne is nature study (pictures), as the butterflies prefer to lay their eggs leaves of plants in the parsley family (Apiaceae) including Queen Anne’s Lace, carrot, celery and dill.
Queen […]

Remember those old Organic Gardening magazines & books? or the old Mother Earth News? The ones back in the day when the focus was growing your own food as healthily and cheaply as possible. The days when people were capable of using what was on hand to get where they needed to go. NOT the […]

Ever have a day (or late night) when you mind just wanders around a problem and answers to questions you never knew you had appear? Well this is what a wandering mind on the internet can find. I have no idea how it all started either, but it was reasonable at the time.
I think it started […]

Other uses

A site that I read regularly asked for ideas on second uses for items already around the house. My contribution:
We purchased a second group of chickens (the polish crested, turkin, and butter cream), thinking the two groups were not that far apart in size and could easily be made one happy family…ha! Once I had […]

Roundup for the family that is spread out this weekend.
Swimming:  We had out first family outing to the city pool today. Our pool charges .25 per person per 2 hour session and is maybe 4 blocks away. We went once last year & am determined to do better this year.  The goal is every Friday. I was a bit […]

Preserving it all

We have been working on finishing planting the garden, the herbs, and assorted other plant projects. Not quite as fast as I’d like, but getting there.
Rhubarb bed: I have wanted one ever since my Dad & Carol gave us some strawberry-rhubarb jam. mmmm…. Last fall Dad made the mention that his plants had grown so […]

Living without running water

Living Without Running Water
My grandma didn’t have running water in her Missouri home.  She had a hand pump and a cistern but no well.  The cistern was filled once or twice a year by a big water tanker about the size of a propane truck.  Lack of running water was not a great hardship perhaps just an inconvenience.  […]
